The Young Environmental Leaders (YEL) program is open to students in year 5-6 and provides them with environmental and leadership outcomes. Forums are held once per term in different locations. Student representatives attend forums and then share their knowledge and skills back at school.
What we offer
The Education team continues to update and improve the program based on feedback from educators and students, ensuring that activities are relevant, engaging and fit within the curriculum.
If your class is already undertaking an environmental/sustainability theme or unit of work, contact an Education Officer to talk about how the Education Program can assist and add value to the lessons.
📝Education sessions
Our education sessions can be tailored to suit students of any year level and to many curriculum areas.
Sessions can be delivered in class or as part of outdoor learning or excursions, and can relate to a wide range of topics. Education Officers can visit the classroom or accompany classes on excursions to learn about local landscapes and environmental topics.

We believe it is important for teachers/educators to learn, grow and take part in some fun hands-on learning that can then be shared with students. 2026 professional development opportunities will be focussed and refined. The Education team may even be able to provide tailored PD to your team/faculty.
Professional development (PD) sessions aim to provide:
- concise and current information on environmental or sustainability topics
- hands-on activities and take-home resources relevant to the curriculum for high school and primary school
- opportunities to relax and connect with nature, the experts and other educators
- PD certificates for attendees
- examples of projects from schools in your local area, and much more.

💐Precious plants for precious people
One of our most popular programs, this initiative has seen thousands of threatened or locally important plants gifted and planted over recent years to support native animals and habitats across the region.
The program started out by giving students plants to gift to their loved ones, but it hasn’t stopped growing since! In 2026, we’re focusing on schools that haven’t taken part in a while. The Education team will offer these schools education sessions, opportunities to plant native plants on school grounds or engage small groups in local projects supporting threatened flora and fauna species.
Schools eligible to participate in 2026 will be contacted in term 1.
