Rocky Gully fish surveys

On Friday 13 March at the Rocky Gully Wetland, three River Murray Youth Council members; Amelie Johnson (myself), Remy Johnson and Megan Swalue spent the morning learning how to safely and properly conduct a fish survey.

We caught and identified so many cool little fishes! We were very lucky to catch a few Murray hardyheads, which are unfortunately a critically endangered species. We managed to catch seven of them!

There were many other species we saw such as unspecked hardyhead, boney bream, common galaxis, carp gudgeon, flat-headed gudgeon, Murray rainbowfish, eastern gambusia, and the invasive European carp. We also managed to score lots of freshwater shrimp and two freshwater yabbies. We also caught two beautiful eastern long-necked turtles.

A big thanks to RMYC Coordinator Ilyth for taking us to the surveys and organising the morning. Also, a big thank you to Wetland Ecologists Ella, Sam, and Amy for welcoming us along and teaching us how to identify the creatures we saw and how to conduct the fish surveys!
