Local government practitioners visit Murray Bridge woody meadow trial site

25 March 2026

Local government practitioners recently visited the woody meadow trial site in Murray Bridge to see the planting concept in action and learn how it can support more climate‑resilient urban landscapes.

Participants explored everything from selecting native species and using inorganic mulch to understanding key monitoring techniques. Feedback highlighted the value of learning about soil types, low‑maintenance management, and how thoughtful species selection—paired with inorganic mulch—can influence long‑term success. Many attendees also remarked on the strong potential for community engagement and the benefits of incorporating more native species into urban areas.

Inspired by the visit, some participants are now considering their own trials, with some already planning or installing woody meadow plantings to share learnings and motivate others across their regions.

This project is a partnership between the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board, the Rural City of Murray Bridge, TREENET and University of Melbourne.
